LiONiL: Library Instruction Online for Information Literacy

Module 1: Selecting a Topic and Defining Information Needs

Formulate a Research Questionstudent studying in library

As you start your research, it is wise to write down your research inquiry as a question or a statement that describes the main ideas or focus of your topic. This question will help you identify the main concepts of your topic and then brainstorm related terms.

Your research question does not have to remain fixed. As you progress through the information search process your information needs will likely evolve as you discover a wide variety of information sources on your topic.
